We all have an inner critic. Some critics are louder, and some people listen more closely to these critical messages, but they exist for everyone. We all tend to pay some extra attention when we’re doing something new. That’s what was happening for one of my clients last month.
My client was full of raw creative energy. She is pursuing a passion and being led by instinct and her gut. She is amazed at the things she’s been able to do in the name of her cause. My client is cold calling, agreeing to give presentations, and offering services in a niche that she’s never served before. And yet…
There is a voice that says “What are you doing? Stay small and safe. Who are you to reach out to people you have never met? You don’t know what you’re doing. You’re not enough.” Harsh, am I right? I imagine it might also sound a little familiar because all of us have an inner critic that says we are not enough in some way. It’s a form of protection and it can be the voice that holds you back in unhelpful ways.
So, what did we do? We got silly. I asked her if she did any funny voices. My client was brave enough to play along.
