I recently accepted a part-time position with Lyra as a mental health coach. After my second interview, I was told that I would hear from the company within 7 days. I could have easily spent the next week figuratively waiting by the phone, checking my email every 5 minutes (or less), and biting off all my nails. Instead, I took a deep breath and decided to forget all about it.
Of course, I was excited about the job and it really mattered to me. I would rather not wait; I was feeling impatient, and I wished they would give me an answer on the spot. I decided that I wanted to spend my next week in a calm and productive state. I didn’t want to waste time fretting over something that was outside of my control and I knew I wouldn’t be able to focus on other things that are also important if I was in the wrong headspace.
I call this practice ‘selective memory.’ I believe it is a steppingstone to the practice of letting go but more accessible.
